Howard Nemerov Biography

Educator, Poet, Author (1920–1991)
Howard Nemerov was a U.S. Poet Laureate, essayist and fiction writer who won the 1978 Pulitzer Prize. His sister was photographer Diane Arbus.


Born on February 29, 1920, in New York, New York, Howard Nemerov served in WWII before becoming a college professor and publishing his first book of poetry, The Image and the Law, in 1947. Having released many works over his career, he earned both the Pulitzer and National Book Award for The Collected Poems of Howard Nemerov (1977). An essayist and fiction writer as well, he died on July 5, 1991.
