Academic, Philosopher (1898–1979)
Herbert Marcuse was an influential 20th century scholar and author known for the works Eros and Civilization and One Dimensional Man.


Born on July 19, 1898, in Berlin, Germany, Herbert Marcuse earned his doctorate from the University of Freiburg and joined the Frankfurt School, migrating to the United States and working in intelligence. His books Eros and Civilization and One Dimensional Man critiqued capitalist social structures, as well as the impositions made on human free expression and joy. Also a Hegel expert, Marcuse died in Starnberg on July 29, 1979.
