Henry III of France, born in 1551, continued his father's war against the Protestant Huguenots, extending and worsening the 16th-century Wars of Religion. He was the last male in line of the Valois dynasty, a fact that stressed his reign. He was eventually stabbed dead by a friar. He was so frivolous and extravagant that he virtually bankrupt his vast kingdom.
