Born in Georgia in 1916, Harry James learned to play the trumpet at age eight and became one of the most admired jazz musicians of the big band era. He was so popular in the early 1940s that Columbia Records couldn't press enough of his records to meet demand. In 1943 he married film star Betty Grable and appeared in several movies.
