Gypsy Rose Lee rose from an early life in vaudeville to America's most famed burlesque performers, becoming the subject of the Broadway show Gypsy.


Gypsy Rose Lee was born Rose Louise Hovick in Seattle, Washington, on January 19, 1911. Lee's mother created a vaudeville show with Gypsy and her younger sister as the stars. It was from this start that her mother eventually put her on the stage to first perform a slow strip tease at the age of 15. Although the burlesque did not lead to a successful movie career, the Broadway show Gypsy was a hit.
