George II was born on July 20, 1890, in Tatoi, Greece. He was King Constantine I’s eldest son. He took the throne in 1922, but had to leave in 1923 after a coup d'état. The Greek National Assembly voted the end of the monarchy in 1924, but the Populist Party restored him to power. In 1936, dictator General Ioannis Metaxas gained power and George II was exiled by the German invasion in 1941.
