Garson Kanin was born on November 24, 1912, in Rochester, New York. He studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and acted on Broadway before signing with RKO studios in 1938 and began directing films, including The Great Man Votes in 1939. In World War II, he produced documentary films for the military. He's known for his freelance collaborations with his wife, Ruth Gordon. He died in 1999.
