Born on April 29, 1907, in Vienna, Austria, Fred Zinnemann initially studied law but became interested in making movies. He moved to Paris and later immigrated to the U.S. He assisted Robert Flaherty with documentaries in Hollywood, which led to Zinnemann’s respect for realism in his own work. He directed many successful feature films. In 1953, he won his first Oscar for the movie From Here to Eternity.
