François Duvalier was Haiti’s president for 14 years. He operated an absolutist regime and caused nearly 30,000 deaths.


François Duvalier was born on April 14, 1907, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He studied medicine and President Dumarsais Estimé appointed him director general of the National Public Health Service in 1946. When Estimé was overthrown, Duvalier organized a resistance and was elected president in 1957. He remained in power for 14 years. He operated a regime of terror, causing nearly 30,000 deaths.
