Fernando Valenzuela was born in Etchohuaquila, Mexico, on November 1, 1960. Known for his distinctive windup, he was voted the NL Rookie of the Year and Cy Young Award winner in 1981, helping the Los Angeles Dodgers win the World Series. A cultural icon in Mexico and in the U.S. Latino community, Valenzuela continued to pitch in Mexico after his 17-year Major League career ended in 1997.
