Dicky Wells Biography

(c. 1907–1985)
Dicky Wells was a leading American jazz trombonist noted for his melodic creativity and expressive techniques.

Around age 20, Dicky Wells became a member of the Lloyd Scott Band. He also played with the Count Basie band, but he was mostly a freelance trombonist. A melodic improviser who typically structured his solos around contrasts of rhythmic character, the grandeur of Wells's earlier art gradually dissipated after the early 1940s, yet he retained his swing and much of his melodic wit.
