Charles IX was born on June 27, 1550 at the Chateau de Saint-Germain-en-Laye near Paris, France. The third son of King Henry II, Charles served as King of France from 1560 until 1574. His reign was marked by the Wars of Religion and the massacre of Protestants on St. Bartholomew's Day in 1572. Charles died of tuberculosis in 1574.
