Who Is Casey Affleck?
Casey Affleck was born on August 12, 1975, in Massachusetts. The younger brother of actor Ben Affleck, Casey has established a career as an actor in his own right, beginning with smaller roles in films such as To Die For (1995) with Joaquin Phoenix and Chasing Amy (1997). He found a much more significant role in the film Good Will Hunting (1997), which helped him showcase his acting talent and land larger roles in film. He starred in his brother's directorial debut, Gone Baby Gone, in 2007, which received relatively positive reviews. Affleck later won a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for his starring role in Manchester by the Sea (2016).
Actor Caleb Casey Affleck was born on August 12, 1975, in Falmouth, Massachusetts. After his parents' divorce, Casey Affleck and his older brother Ben were raised by their mother in Cambridge. It was she who first got the boys interested in acting, with Casey gaining notice for his turn as Bobby Kennedy in the 1990 ABC miniseries, The Kennedys of Massachusetts.
After graduating from Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, Casey headed to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting. He landed a role in Gus Van Sant's To Die For before returning to the East Coast to study politics, physics and astronomy at George Washington University and Columbia University. He returned to Los Angeles for a supporting role in 1997's Good Will Hunting, the Oscar-winning screenplay that was famously written by his brother and childhood friend Matt Damon.
While Ben Affleck became an overnight A-list celebrity, Casey took a different course, concentrating primarily on character roles in independent films, such as Desert Blue and 200 Cigarettes. These small projects led to his Hollywood breakthrough as one of the members of George Clooney's Ocean's Eleven (2001) and its sequels. In his own time, Affleck assumed more grown-up roles, including 2005's Lonesome Jim and 2006's The Last Kiss.
In 2007, Affleck turned in two acclaimed performances, as the murderous Robert Ford in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and as a introspective private investigator in his brother's hit directorial debut Gone, Baby, Gone. He received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Ford.
Affleck made his directorial debut in 2010 with his mockumentary, I'm Still Here. The film starred brother-in-law Joaquin Phoenix and his year-long faux journey into becoming a rap star. When Affleck admitted Phoenix was merely performing a role, he received some criticism but claimed he "never intended to trick anybody." That same year, he continued to act, starring as a sociopath in The Killer Inside Me.
In 2013 he played opposite Rooney Mara in Ain't Them Bodies Saints, as well as opposite Christian Bale in Out of the Furnace. In 2014 he took a smaller role in Christopher Nolan's Interstellar. In 2016, Affleck appeared in the crime thriller Triple 9 and the historical drama The Finest Hours.
'Manchester by the Sea'
Also in 2016, Affleck starred in Manchester by the Sea as a struggling handyman who winds up caring for his deceased brother's son. The film was marked by strong performances, with Affleck earning rave reviews for his troubled, guilt-ridden Lee Chandler. In early 2017, he took home a Golden Globe and then an Academy Award for the effort.
Collaborating with Joaquin Phoenix again, Affleck was set to direct him in the upcoming film Far Bright Star, based on Robert Olmstead’s novel about a group of men hunting for Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa.
Sexual Harassment Allegations
In 2010 two women who worked on the mockumentary, I'm Still Here, sued Affleck for sexual harassment, citing a barrage of verbally degrading comments, as well as physically inappropriate behavior. One of the women even accused Affleck of slipping into her bed while she was sleeping and touching her back.
Affleck's lawyer claimed the two women had fictionalized the incidents, but the actor ultimately settled out of court with each woman and also gave them credit for their work on the film. The sexual harassment allegations returned to haunt Affleck in 2016 after the actor garnered attention for his work in Manchester By the Sea. In early 2018, with the issue of sexual harassment still front and center in Hollywood, Affleck announced he would not attend the Oscars, where he was scheduled to present the award for Best Actress.
Casey Affleck has been married to Summer Phoenix since 2006. They have two sons, Indiana August and Atticus. The couple separated in March 2016 and since then, Affleck has been dating actress Floriana Lima.
Affleck is a vegan and is actively involved in animal rights, working with groups like PETA and Farm Sanctuary.
