Artist, Sculptor (1921–1998)
French artist César Baldaccini created large sculptural representations from found objects. He was at the forefront of the New Realism movement.


French sculptor César Baldaccini was born on January 1, 1921, in Marseille, France. His parents were Italian immigrants and he grew up poor, but received a scholarship to study art in Paris. He became known for creating work out of found objects and for creating large works, such as a 40-foot version of his thumb. He also created the French film industry’s annual award. He died in 1998.
