Born in New Orleans on December 24, 1898, Warren "Baby" Dodds played with Fate Marable's riverboat bands (1918–1921) and joined King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band in 1922. By the end of the decade, Dodds had performed with the likes of Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, and his own brother Johnny Dodds. His distinctive style was admired by bebop drummers as well as early jazz artists.
