Who Is Ansel Elgort?

Ansel Elgort received a 2018 Golden Globes nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Musical or Comedy Motion Picture for his role as the title character in the 2017 film ‘Baby Driver.’ He first gained widespread notice in 2014, by co-starring with Shailene Woodley in both the science-fiction tale Divergent (as her character's brother) and the romantic drama The Fault in Our Stars (as Woodley's character's love interest). In addition to acting, Elgort is passionate about music — he has a deal with Island Records and writes techno-inflected songs with romantic lyrics and also works as an EDM DJ and producer, under the alias “Ansolo.”

Elgort made his film debut with a small role in the 2013 horror remake Carrie, which starred Chloë Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore. The following year, he co-starred in two huge films with Shailene Woodley. He played Caleb, Woodley’s character's brother in the science-fiction tale Divergent, a box-office hit that grossed nearly $300 million in global ticket sales.

Then, in the romantic drama The Fault in Our Stars, Elgort portrayed Augustus Waters and Woodley played Hazel Lancaster, a pair of terminally ill teenagers who meet at a cancer support group and fall in love. Based on the popular book by John Green, that film grossed $307 million at the global box office and, subsequently, propelled Elgort to teen idol status.

Later that year, Elgort also had a role in Jason Reitman's drama film Men, Women & Children, starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Garner. He returned for the sequels to Divergent, Insurgent in 2015 and Allegiant in 2016.

Elgort next took in the title role in Baby Driver, director Edgar Wright's action film, where he starred opposite Lily James and Kevin Spacey. Though Baby works for Spacey’s slick crime world, he is not a hardened delinquent, but rather a conscientious orphan struggling to pay off a childhood debt and help his aging and deaf African-American foster parent. The critically acclaimed film was a box office hit in the summer of 2017.

Alias: Ansolo

After acting, Elgort’s second passion is EDM (electronic dance music). The actor writes his own songs and has also worked as a DJ and producer, remixing house music under the alias “Ansolo.”

Island Records signed Elgort to its roster in September 2014. A month later, he performed as Ansolo at the Amsterdam Dance Event, an annual citywide, five-day festival, where he opened for some of his heroes. International headliners Afrojack and Nicky Romero stopped by his booth to show support.

He is serious about this work and determined not to be thought of as just some actor who wants to play music in a club. "Being accepted into this group, that’s the ultimate for me,” he said in an interview with GQ Magazine. “These other guys were playing my records before they knew who Ansolo was, just because it was on a big record label. And the record label signed me before they knew me as Ansolo."

Upcoming Roles

Having set aside his music career for the time being, Elgort has been busy working on new film projects with upcoming roles in Jonathan, Billionaire Boys Club and The Goldfinch.
