Anna Ivanovna was born in 1693 in Moscow, Russia. Her husband, Frederick William, ruler of Courland, died shortly after their wedding. Subsequently, the Supreme Privy Council offered Anna the throne, but with some stipulations. When Ivanovna moved to Moscow, however, she tore up the conditions, and soon became known for terrorizing anyone who opposed her or her policies. She ruled as empress of Russia from 1730 until her death in 1740.
