Anatole France was born on April 16, 1844 in Paris, France. The son of a bookseller, France spent most of his life around books. His work was ironic and skeptical and France was an urbane critic who was considered the ideal French man of letter in his day. He was elected to the French Academy in 1896 and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1921. He died in 1924.
