Alexander Gardner Biography

Alexander Gardner was a Scottish photographer who moved to the United States and took some of the most memorable photos of the American Civil War.


Alexander Gardner was born on October. 17, 1821 in Scotland. He was hired by Mathew Brady as a portrait photographer and moved to the US. When the Civil War erupted, Gardner assisted Brady in recording the conflict but then struck out on his own in 1863. Gardner's war photography, including his portrait of Abraham Lincoln, are among the best-known images of the war. Gardner died in 1882.
