Military Leader, Emperor (1783–1824)
Agustin de Iturbide was a Mexican military chieftain who was the leader of the conservative factions in the Mexican independence movement and emperor of Mexico.


Agustin de Iturbide was born Sept. 27, 1783, in Morelia, Mexico. As a young man he entered the royalist army. His defense of Valladolid against revolutionary forces dealt a crushing blow to the insurgents, and for he was given command of the military district of Guanajuato and Michoacán. On May 19, 1822, he placed the crown upon his own head and became Agustín I, emperor of Mexico.
