Adlai Stevenson was 23rd vice president of the United States (1893–1897) in the Democratic administration of President Grover Cleveland.


Adlai Stevenson was born Oct. 23, 1835, in Christian County, Kentucky. He twice won election to the United States House of Representatives, where he favored low tariffs and a soft-money policy. In 1888, he was named associate justice of the Supreme Court for the District of Columbia. When Cleveland was renominated in 1892, Stevenson was selected as the vice-presidential candidate.
