Adlai Stevenson was born Oct. 23, 1835, in Christian County, Kentucky. He twice won election to the United States House of Representatives, where he favored low tariffs and a soft-money policy. In 1888, he was named associate justice of the Supreme Court for the District of Columbia. When Cleveland was renominated in 1892, Stevenson was selected as the vice-presidential candidate.
