The film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is based on the novel by counterculture hero Ken Kesey. As filming began, Kesey had a lot of issues and creative differences with the production including wanting Gene Hackman to star as McMurphy instead of Jack Nicholson. He so disliked the production and how the film turned out that he claimed never to have watched it in its entirety, sued the studio, and won a settlement. In an ironic twist, while Kesey's own screenplay had been turned down by the Hollywood studio, the Milos Forman movie went on to be considered one of the best American films in cinematic history.
