Biography.com's "Week in Review" highlights interesting people who've made the news this past week—thanks to their endeavors, big ideas, triumphs, importance in history, or magnanimous gaffes. While there were many people to choose from this week, here are our top picks that made us either raise an eyebrow, roll our eyes, shed a tear, or just gave us a good chuckle.
President Obama Blurts 'Horses and Bayonets'...But Romney Still Gets the Last Bird
On Monday night President Barack Obama arguably took home the win against Mitt Romney in the final presidential debate on foreign policy—both in substance and in quips. In response to Romney's chiding of the Navy shrinking in size, Obama replied: "You mentioned...that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the nature of our military's changed." [Cue: an explosion of geysers above Romney's upper lip.] Although Obama may have won the most memorable catchphrase of that night, Romney (and perhaps Obama?) wins the latest chuckle: According to CNN, Big Bird Halloween costumes have been selling out across the country. Donald Trump's 'October Surprise' on Obama Just Lame
Donald Trump's anticipated announcement this week, deemed to be damning to President Obama, ended up falling flatter than his beavertail-shaped hair. The Celebrity Apprentice star came out with eyes squinting and lips protruding, offering the President $5 million dollars to a charity of his choice in exchange for his passport records and college transcripts. (Ummm. Yeah. With that said, we're thinking you should tune into SNL this week.) Coincidentally, feminist activist and lawyer Gloria Allred countered Trump's announcement with her own against Mitt Romney: She has apparently unearthed testimony that revealed Romney had allegedly lied under oath about the value of the office supply franchise Staples to help founder Tom Stemberg keep most of his financial assets from his soon-to-be ex wife, Maureen Sullivan Stemberg, whom was Allred's client in 1991. Romney's camp has called Allred's charges ridiculous and claims these allegations have been brought up time and again, with the courts continually clearing the former Massachusetts governor of any wrongdoing. Details have been trickling in all week about Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel's lavish wedding in Italy on October 19, which entertained among its 100 guests, celebrity buds Jimmy Fallon and Andy Samberg. "It was a total fantasy experience," Biel, 30, told People. Among the "need-to-know-or-dieee" fantasy revelations: the bride wore a blushing pink couture wedding gown and JT decided to serenade Jess with a special song as she strutted down the aisle. (We hope it wasn't an acoustic version of that anatomical ballad he sang with Samberg on SNL...you know the one—Hammerpants, box, and all.) Taylor Swift's New Album Red Makes Music Sales History
With her latest release Red, which is filled with her personal story of love gone awry, Taylor Swift continues using her broken heart to break records. According to MTV, she's on the road to selling a million units this week alone, which has her set to shatter records in Billboard, Nielson SoundScan, iTunes, and Amazon. (Whatchoo got, Bieber?) With her astounding success, maybe Joe Jonas, Jake Gyllenhaal, and John Mayer should take cues from Adele's former ex by considering taking a cut of her profits. Lady Gaga Named After a Fern Species Duke biologists are the latest scientists to get into the "Let's-name-a-new-species-after-a-celebrity-to-get-some-attention-since-everyone-forgets-about-us-in-our-basement-labs" game! Their celeb of choice? Lady Gaga. According to biologist and Gaga enthusiast Kathleen Pryer, the similarities between the newly minted fern Gaga germanotta and the eccentric singer are uncanny—from their physical appearance to their sexuality. (Gaga germanotta is among 18 other species, which are all under the umbrella of the "Gaga" genus.) Watch the video and find out why they were both 'Born This Way'...
