Nelson Mandela’s unwavering dedication to global peace is celebrated each year on his birthday, July 18. The day was declared Nelson Mandela International Day in 2009, and this year marks the first time it will be recognized since his passing in December 2013.

The "father of South Africa" is remembered for his remarkable life and the multitude of contributions he made to guide humanity toward peace and freedom. Today is meant to uplift and encourage people to volunteer 67 minutes of their time (one minute for each year Mandela spent in public service) to take action to fight against intolerance, foster peace, and assist people in need.

Search giant Google has honored Mandela with an interactive Google Doodle which depicts the life of the anti-apartheid activist with illustrations and inspirational quotes.

In a statement from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, he said, “Nelson Mandela Day is a call to action. Each of us can celebrate this Day by helping to address real problems in our communities. Together we can give great meaning to our celebration by paving the way for a better future.”
