Jack Kerouac didn’t have an easy childhood. The iconic writer grew up with an alcoholic father and a family that could barely keep food on the table. His only way out -- or so he thought -- was athletics. He went to Columbia University on a football scholarship, where he eventually dropped out and followed through with his true passion, writing. Actor Jon Hamm had a hard time growing up, too, with the loss of several family members, and was also a great football player in his younger years. But Hamm opted to ditch the football scholarships he was offered to pursue a degree in English, Kerouac's forte. We bet that Kerouac’s most well-known novel, On the Road (1957), is sitting next to Don Draper -- Jon Hamm's Mad Men character -- right next to his never-ending supply of cigarettes and scotch.
