Bobbi Kristina Brown, the 22-year-old daughter and only child of the late music superstar Whitney Houston and New Edition singer Bobby Brown, died on July 26 surrounded by her family at Peachtree Christian Hospice in Duluth, Georgia.
"She is finally at peace in the arms of God," the Houston family said in a statement to ET. "We want to again thank everyone for their tremendous amount of love and support during these last few months."
On January 31, Brown was found face down and unresponsive in a bathtub full of water at her home in Roswell, Georgia, circumstances eerily similar to the events leading to the death of her mother. Brown was in a medically induced coma for five months following the incident and transferred to hospice care in Duluth, Georgia, in June.
The death of Brown is another tragic turn for her famously troubled family. Three years ago, Whitney Houston died at the age of 48, after being found submerged in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. The cause of Houston's death was accidental drowning with the contributing factors of heart disease and cocaine found in her system.
In a tragic twist of fate, Brown, like her mother, was found unresponsive in a bathtub full of water by Nick Gordon, a longtime boyfriend whom she called her husband, and a friend Max Lomas, in her Roswell, Georgia home. Brown was hospitalized and placed in a medically induced coma.
While the world reacted to the news of Brown's hospitalization, including a public vigil for her recovery attended by hundreds in suburban Atlanta, the investigation continued into the circumstances surrounding her death. Rumors surfaced that Brown had "injuries that still need to be explained," according to a CNN report, and Georgia police confirmed to Reuters that a criminal investigation was underway.
Brown lived most of her young life under the glare of the tabloid spotlight with her family's highly publicized struggles including her parents' drug problems, incidents of domestic violence and their divorce making headlines and playing out on reality TV. In recent years Brown's relationship with Gordon became another source of sensational speculation. Gordon was raised with Brown in the Houston household since he was 12. The two began a romantic relationship after Whitney Houston's death, and although Brown posted on Twitter in 2014 that she married Gordon, Bobby Brown's lawyer refuted the claim in February of this year.
Brown, the sole heir to Whitney Houston's estate, struggled with the loss of her mother. In a 2012 interview with Oprah Winfrey, her first interview following the death of her mother, 19-year-old Brown said: "I'm doing as good as I possibly can at this point. I’m just trying to keep going." She called her mother "an amazing spirit," adding: “She wasn't only a mother, she was a best friend.”
More recently on January 26 of this year, just days before her own hospitalization, Brown posted this message on Twitter.
Her mother similarly expressed her love for her daughter in her last one-on-one interview before her death. Whitney Houston told Access Hollywood: "My daughter is my greatest inspiration."
In May, Brown's grandmother Cissy Houston, Whitney Houston's mother, spoke to Entertainment Tonight about her granddaughter's condition: "She's the same, she's not progressing at all. She's not gone yet, but you know, whatever the Lord decides, I'm ready for her... I have nothing to do with that. That's His job. It's His territory, you know? And I understand it."
Brown was medically evacuated to Chicago and examined by experts in brain trauma where it was concluded that nothing could be done to save her, according to People magazine. Following the consultation, it was reported by Radar Online that her father Bobby Brown, who was appointed his daughter's co-guardian with Pat Houston, the wife of Whitney Houston's brother Gary, made the decision to have her taken off of life support.
Brown was transferred to Peachtree Christian Hospice in Duluth, Georgia at the end of June. “Despite the great medical care at numerous facilities, Bobbi Kristina Brown’s condition has continued to deteriorate," Pat Houston said in a statement at that time. "As of today, she has been moved into hospice care. We thank everyone for their support and prayers. She is in God's hands now."
Earlier this month, Bobby Brown became a father again when his wife, Alicia Etheredge, gave birth to a baby girl, whom they named Bodhi Jameson Rein. The couple have a son, Cassius, who was born in 2009.
