The “Ice Bucket Challenge” to raise awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, has resulted in an epic fundraising boon for research and support. It’s unclear how the trend began, but people all over the world have been posting short videos of themselves on social media getting doused with a bucket of ice water and challenging friends to do the same.
Lou Gehrig was a baseball phenom from the minute he took to the field until the disease stripped him of the ability to walk, talk and eventually breathe. The once formidable athlete died at the age of 37.
