Former American Idol star Clay Aiken's run for Congress in North Carolina took a sad twist on Monday when his opponent in the Democratic primary, Keith Crisco, died suddenly after suffering injuries from a fall. 

Aiken stopped his campaign activities out of respect for Crisco, and just 24 hours later the singer-actor-wannabe-Congressman was announced the winner of the primary by a very narrow margin.

A bizarre turn of events for Aiken who's hoping to follow in the footsteps of some other stars who have made the leap from the Hollywood spotlight to the political stage. 

As Aiken prepares to battle the Republican incumbent, here's a look at some performer-turned-politicos who've gone all the way to Washington.
