Opened in 1913, the Hotel Theresa was considered the "Waldorf Astoria of Harlem" welcoming famous African-Americans, such as Joe Louis and Lena Horne, who were turned away from "whites only" hotels. It was also the site where Martin Luther King Jr., A. Philip Randolph and others organized the 1963 March on Washington and where Fidel Castro stayed when he visited New York City in 1960.
