After moving through the army's ranks, he was named Army Chief of Staff in 1998. A year later, he led a coup to topple Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, dismissed parliament, imposed martial law, and assumed the chief executive position. Musharraf has made regaining Kashmir from India and crushing extremism two of his top priorities.
