Episode Description

Born on the 25th November 1915 in Valparaiso, Chile, Augusto Pinochet is alleged to have caused the kidnapping, death or disappearance of more than 3000 political opponents. He was appointed army commander in chief by President Allende--18 days later he led the coup that resulted in Allende's death. His regime, condemned for its brutality, is credited with stimulating economic growth. Pinochet was made senator for life in 1998, guaranteeing him lifelong immunity from criminal prosecution. He was arrested in London in 2006 on a warrant calling for extradition to face charges for the deaths of Spanish nationals under his regime. Pinochet was never tried for those or other charges brought against him, as he died suddenly from a heart attack one week later.
