Profile of the music superstar and political activist whose friends include everyone from Bill Clinton to Jack Nicholson and Muhammad Ali. At age 15, Bono's suffered a great loss when his mother died of a brain aneurysm while attending her own father's funeral. At that time, he found himself drawn to music, absorbing inspiration from such bands as Patti Smith, Thin Lizzy and The Ramones. It was also around this time that Paul Hewson got his new name--Bono--when a friend appropriated it from the Bono Vox hearing aid store. In 1976, Bono answered an ad asking for someone interested in forming a band. U2 was the result. While fronting one of the most successful bands in recent times, Bono is equally renowned for fighting third world poverty and AIDS.
