Victims

From the victims and the heroes who met their fate trying to save them, to our government's leaders and the faces of terror, the lives of so many were forever changed on 9/11. Featured below are brief portraits of some of the victims who we've come to know -- whether due to their high profile jobs or their actions on Flight 93. Also included are government and administration officials who played a prominent role during and in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.

David Angell |

Passenger on American Airlines Flight 11

David AngellDavid Angell (1946-2001), television producer and writer. Originally from Rhode Island, he had a degree from Providence College. Angell also served in the U.S. Army and worked for the Pentagon for a time. He worked several different jobs before moving to California in 1977 where he sold his first television script. Joining the writing staff for the hit situation comedy, Cheers, in 1983, he eventually won two Emmy Awards for his work on the show-first as a writer and later as a producer. He found even greater success with the much-beloved comedy series Frasier, which he co-created and produced with Peter Casey and David Lee. Known for his sharp wit, Angell won an Emmy Award for writing for the show and five more as its executive producer. Returning from a vacation on Cape Cod in Massachusetts, Angell and his wife Lynn were flying back home to California on American Airlines Flight 11. After terrorists took over their flight, they crashed the plane into north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. That day the entertainment industry lost a great talent and the world lost a pair of philanthropists. The Angells were known for their generosity, especially for their contributions to Hillsides, a home for abused children.

Todd Beamer |

Passenger on United Airlines Flight 93

Todd BeamerTodd Beamer (1968-2001), account manager for Oracle Corporation. In his youth, he excelled at sports. Beamer played baseball for Fresno State University before transferring to Wheaton College in Illinois where he met his wife Lisa. While he continued to play baseball, he got serious about his future, eventually earning a master's degree in business administration from DePaul University. He and Lisa married in 1994 and moved to New Jersey where he went to work for Oracle. Traveling on United Airlines Flight 93 for business, Beamer was one of the passengers believed to have fought the terrorists. His final known words, heard by an air-phone operator, were "Let's roll," which served as a call to action as he and several others sought to take control of the plane. While they couldn't overpower the terrorists, they did prevent the plane from crashing into another building, saving countless lives. Remembered as a hero, Beamer is survived by his wife and three children, one of whom was born months after his death.

Mark Bingham |

Passenger on United Airlines Flight 93

Mark Bingham Mark Bingham (1970-2001), the chief executive officer of The Bingham Group, a public relations firm. Tall and athletic, he started playing rugby as a teenager and continued in college at the University of California, Berkeley. Even after graduating in 1993, Bingham pursued his love of the game, joining the San Francisco Fog, a gay rugby team. Along with sports, he was interested in politics and had served as a volunteer on Senator John McCain's 2000 bid for the Republican presidential nomination. A self-made success story, Bingham founded his own company, which had offices in New York and San Francisco. It was a business trip that led Bingham to take United Airlines Flight 93. After the plane was hijacked, he called his mother, Alice Hoglan, and his aunt, Kathy, to let them know what happened and that he loved them. It is believed that Bingham participated in the effort to stop the terrorists along with several other passengers. Despite their efforts, they were unable to gain control of the plane, but they did stop the terrorists from using it as a weapon. The plane crashed outside of Shanksville, Pennsylvania. He has been remembered by friends and family as a hero, a leader, and a friendly, caring person.

Thomas E. "Tom" Burnett Jr |

Passenger on United Airlines Flight 93

Thomas E. Burnett Jr Thomas E. "Tom" Burnett Jr. (1963-2001), senior vice president and chief operating officer of Thoratec Corporation, a medical device manufacturer. Burnett grew up in Bloomington, Minnesota, where he was a good student and a strong athlete. After playing football for Saint John's University for two years, he was sidelined by an injury. Burnett then transferred to University of Minnesota where he received a bachelor's degree in finance. In 1996, he joined the Pleasanton, California-based Thoratec and proved to be one of its leading employees, quickly rising to the top. It was his wish to return home early from a business trip to be with his wife Deena and three young daughters that led him to take United Airlines Flight 93. After the plane was hijacked, he called home several times. Burnett described the attack to his wife and asked her to call the authorities. He later called to tell her that he and some of the other passengers "were going to do something" to stop the terrorists. Burnett, along with several others, is remembered as one of the heroes who fought to regain control of the plane. Flight 93 crashed in a field outside of Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

William "Bill" Feehan |

FDNY First Deputy Fire Commissioner-WTC Victim

William Feehan William "Bill" Feehan (1929-2001), first deputy fire commissioner of Fire Department of New York (FDNY). Born and raised in Queens, he graduated from Saint John's University in 1952. After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korea War, Feehan joined FDNY in 1959. Over the years, he received numerous promotions, eventually earning the position of the department's second-highest ranking officer. Admired by many for his dedication, he had more than forty years of experience on the job, making one of the most knowledgeable members of the FDNY. Feehan had fought many tough fires during his long career, including the 1960 Brooklyn Navy Yard fire that killed 50 people and injured hundreds more. But nothing could have prepared him for devastation at the World Trade Center. Working from a command post by the south tower, he helped with the rescue efforts. Committed to his work no matter what the danger, Feehan died when the south tower fell. He is survived by his two daughters, two sons, one of whom is a firefighter, and six grandchildren.

Peter J. Ganci |

FDNY Chief of Department-WTC Victim

Peter J. Ganci Peter J. Ganci (1946-2001), chief and 33-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY). Despite his high rank in the department, he was known for being humble, unpretentious, and fond of practical jokes. Ganci started out in the FDNY in the 1960s, fighting fires in Brooklyn and the Bronx. He steadily rose in rank, eventually becoming a battalion chief in the late 1980s. Continuing to advance, Ganci earned more promotions in the 1990s. In 1999, he was selected as acting chief and later was officially named chief of the department. On September 11, Ganci raced to the World Trade Center and remained active on the scene even after the first tower fell. Despite the apparent dangers, he walked toward the collapsed building to coordinate rescue efforts. Then the second tower fell, burying him under several feet of rubble. At his funeral, hundreds of firefighters turned out to say good-bye to their courageous chief. He is survived by his wife Kathleen, daughter Danielle, and sons Christopher and Peter.

Edmund Glazer |

Passenger on American Airlines Flight 11

Edmund GlazerEdmund Glazer (1960-2001), chief financial officer of MRV Communications, Inc. He was born in Ndola, Zambia, and moved to the United States as a teenager. An excellent student, he graduated from high school early and enrolled at University of Southern California at the age of 17. Glazer graduated in 1981 with a degree in business administration. After working for several companies, he joined the staff of MRV Communications in 1994. Glazer became vice president of finance and administration and CFO for the Chatsworth, California-based company the following year. At the time of the terrorist attacks, he and his wife Candy had been living in Wellesley, Massachusetts, with their young son Nathan. That fateful morning, he left his home before dawn for a business trip and boarded American Airlines Flight 11 for Los Angeles. His flight was the one that crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center. Friends, family, and co-workers all mourned the passing of this bright, caring man, known for his dry sense of humor, love of chess and hockey, and dedication to his family.

Jeremy Glick |

Passenger on American Airlines Flight 11

Jeremy GlickJeremy Glick (1970-2001), sales manager for Vividence, Inc. As a child, he began studying judo and later became a national college judo champion while he was a student at the University of Rochester. He also competed in other sports, such as wrestling, soccer, and lacrosse during high school. It was during this formative time that Glick met his future wife Lyzbeth. The two later married and had a daughter named Emerson. They had been living in Hewitt, New Jersey, at the time of the terrorist attacks. Glick had boarded United Airlines Flight 93 to take a business trip. After the hijacking occurred, he called his wife to report what had happened and that some of the passengers were talking about rushing the hijackers. At the end of their call, Glick said, "We decided. We're going to do it." It is believed that Glick and several fellow passengers foiled the terrorists' scheme of using the plane as a weapon. Instead of striking a building as the terrorists had planned, it crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The actions of Glick and his fellow passengers most likely saved hundreds of lives.

Peter Hanson |

Passenger on United Airlines Flight 175

Peter HansonPeter Hanson (1969-2001), vice president of sales for TimeTrade Systems Inc. Raised in Easton, Connecticut, he was a graduate of Joel Barlow High School. A fan of the Grateful Dead, Hanson wore his hair in dreadlocks for a time. He moved to Boston to attend Northeastern University. Continuing his studies at Boston University, Hanson earned a master's degree in business administration in 1994. While living in Boston, he met his future wife Sue, a research technician and Ph.D candidate. The couple later married and moved to Groton, Massachusetts, not long before the birth of their daughter, Christine. The entire Hanson family was aboard United Airlines Flight 175 on their way to visit Sue's grandmother in California. After terrorists took over the plane, Hanson called his parents' home and talked to his father, Lee, and told him of the hijacking. He called again to tell his parents that he loved them and to say good-bye, shortly before the plane struck the south tower of the World Trade Center. Communities in both Connecticut and Massachusetts mourned the tragic passing of this family. Their daughter Christine, only two years old at the time, was the youngest victim of the September 11th attacks.

Heather Malia Ho |

Windows on the World Employee-WTC Victim

Heather Malia HoHeather Malia Ho (1969–2001), a pastry chef at Windows on the World restaurant. Growing in Honolulu, Hawaii, she discovered her passion for cooking as a child. Ho went to Boston University and then the Culinary Institute of America to pursue a career in the food industry. While working in California, she received accolades for her imaginative desserts and was even named pastry chef of the year by San Francisco magazine in 2000. Ho joined the staff of Windows of the World, the legendary restaurant located on the 107th floor of the World Trade Center's north tower, only a few months prior to the attacks. She dreamed of opening her own pastry shop one day. Unfortunately, she was unable to make that dream a reality. Ho was working at the restaurant at the time the north tower was hit by American Airlines Flight 11. She, and more than 70 of her co-workers, died as a result of the terrorist attacks.

Mychal Judge |

FDNY Chaplain-WTC Victim

Mychal JudgeReverend Mychal Judge (1933-2001), the chaplain of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) for nine years. He was the son of Irish immigrants and grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He lost his father to illness at a young age and found his religious calling as a teenager. Judge was ordained in 1954, joining the Franciscan Order. Over the years, he held numerous positions, including serving as pastor for churches in New Jersey and New York. In 1992, Judge began working with the FDNY as a temporary chaplain and officially took over the post in 1994. Danger did not keep Judge from tending to his flock on September 11. He was struck and killed by a piece of debris shortly after performing last rites for a fallen firefighter at the World Trade Center site. In addition to his work with the FDNY, "Father Mike"-as he was known-counseled and comforted people from all walks of life, including those who lost loved ones during an earlier tragedy, the explosion of Flight 800 in 1996.

Daniel M. Lewin |

Passenger on American Airlines Flight 11

Daniel M. LewinDaniel M. Lewin (1970-2001), co-founder and chief technology officer of Akamai Technologies, Inc. Born in Denver, Colorado, he and his family emigrated to Israel in 1984. After serving four years in the Israeli Army, Lewin went to study at Technion, the Israel Institute of Technology where he earned degrees in computer science and mathematics. In 1996, he returned to the United States to continue his education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He began working on improving how computer networks handled Internet traffic and earned his master's degree in 1998. That same year, he co-founded Akamai with Tom Leighton, one of his professors at MIT, using algorithms the two developed as the basis for their new business venture. Lewin was aboard American Airlines Flight 11 and was thought to have been killed by the hijackers before the plane crashed into the World Trade Center's north tower. Friends and family believe that Lewin, with his military training, tried to stop the terrorists. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

Gary Lutnick |

Fitzgerald Employee-WTC Victim

Gary LutnickGary Lutnick (1964-2001), a partner with Cantor Fitzgerald. A skilled trader who worked the U.S. agency desk, he was known outside of the office as a loyal friend and a loving brother and uncle. Orphaned as a teenager, Lutnick was extremely close to his siblings, his sister Edie and his brother Howard, the chairman and chief executive officer of Cantor Fitzgerald. He was in his office at Cantor Fitzgerald's headquarters in the World Trade Center's north tower at the time of the attacks. American Airlines Flight 11 struck the north tower, and smoke from the resulting fire began filling the building's upper floors. Trapped in his office, Lutnick called his sister to say that he didn't think he was going to make it. He told her that he loved her and asked to tell the rest of the family that he loved them as well. More than 650 other employees of Cantor Fitzgerald lost their lives that same day.

Barbara Olson |

Passenger on American Airlines Flight 77

Barbara OlsonBarbara Olson (1955-2001), legal analyst, author, and former federal prosecutor. Born Barbara Kay Bracher, she was a graduate of Yeshiva University's law school. After completing her studies, Olson spent much of her time working in Washington, D.C. She spearheaded the investigation of Bill and Hillary's firing of White House travel office staff, which became known as "Travelgate." The conservative Olson continued to be critical of the Clintons, penning two books about them: Hell to Pay: The Unfolding Story of Hillary Rodham Clinton (1999) and The Final Days: The Last, Desperate Abuses of Power by the Clinton White House (2001), which was published after her death. She was a popular television commentator and part of a Washington power couple. Her husband was U.S. Solicitor General Ted Olson. A passenger on American Airlines Flight 77, she called him twice before the plane crashed into the Pentagon.

Betty Ong |

Flight Attendant on American Airlines Flight 11

Betty OngBetty Ong (1956-2001), a flight attendant with American Airlines for fourteen years. Born in San Francisco, California, she was known for her warm personality and caring nature. And on September 11, she showed that she was a dedicated professional, remaining calm and clear-headed under the direst of circumstances. Working on American Airlines Flight 11, she called her airline's reservation office shortly after the terrorist had taken over the plane. Ong relayed the tragedy that was unfolding inside the aircraft-terrorists had stabbed a passenger in business class and two flight attendants. For approximately 25 minutes, she stayed on the line, trying to give authorities as much information as possible. Lost contact with Ong was lost shortly before the plane crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center. She is remembered as a loving daughter, sister, and aunt and as a heroine for helping to sound the alarm about the terrorist attacks.
