Profile

In 1885, Yuan Shikai was made Chinese commissioner at Seoul and rose steadily through the ranks of government. Nearly 25 years later, revolution threatened to engulf the Qing dynasty, and so both the emperor and the provisional president in Nanjing recommended Yuan to be the first president of China. But after an ill-advised grab for lifelong power, he was forced to resign.
