Profile

Although he attacked many churches early in his religious evolution, William Penn would earn his place in history for promoting religious tolerance. In Pennsylvania, Penn hoped to provide a refuge for Quakers and other persecuted people and to build an ideal Christian commonwealth. After less than two years, Penn had to leave for England, and he left the province in 1701, never to see it again.
