Willem Einthoven biography

Profile

Willem Einthoven was born on May 21, 1860, in Semarang, Java, Indonesia. In 1903, Einthoven devised the first string galvanometer and with it measured the changes of electrical potential caused by contractions of the heart muscle and to record them graphically. He coined the term electrocardiogram (EKG) for this process. Einthoven continued to develop electrode arrangements, and the present-day standard limb leads were originally described and used by him.
