Werner Arber's research was on the action of protective enzymes present in the bacteria infected by viruses, which modify the DNA of the infecting virus. He and two colleagues were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for 1978. They were cited specifically for the discovery and application of enzymes that break the giant molecules of DNA into manageable, and recognizable, pieces.
