W.E. Gladstone biography

Profile

When Benjamin Disraeli resigned in 1868, Queen Victoria called on W.E. Gladstone to form a government, and he became prime minister. In 1873, Gladstone resigned but was forced back into office by Disraeli's refusal to return. His PM/resignation cycle occurred three more times, until he resigned for good in 1894, but he is regarded as perhaps the greatest British politician of the 19th century.
