The seventh son of Elijah Muhammad, the leader of the Nation of Islam, Warith Deen Mohammed was marked for leadership of the society even before his birth. But he repeatedly left or was banished from the Nation because his reform efforts tried to bring the organization into line with traditional Sunni Islam and move it away from the unique interpretation of Islam espoused by his father.
