Virgil Thomson wrote music in a variety of styles, including Gregorian chant, variations on Baptist hymns and neoclassicism, often combining traditional forms with contemporary techniques. His operas are among his best-known works, such as Four Saints in Three Acts and The Mother of Us All. He was also a music critic for the New York Herald Tribune and published collections of critical articles.
