Ascending the throne on his father's abdication, Victor Emmanuel II consolidated his position by suppressing the republican left and paying an indemnity to Austria. In 1852 he made the decision to turn the government over to the able, determined Count Cavour, whose skillful maneuvers over the next few years made Emmanuel king of Italy. Always at war, Emmanuel secured Venetia and Rome for Italy.
