In 1962, Ne Win carried out a coup d'état, establishing the Revolutionary Council of the Union of Burma, whose members were mostly drawn from the armed forces. After revamping economic and foreign policy, by the late 1980s Burma was one of the world's poorest countries. In 2002, he was placed under house arrest following the imprisonment of his opponents and remained in custody until his death in Yangon, Myanmar.
