U Ne Win was born on May 24, 1911, in Paungdale, Myanmar. In 1962, Ne Win carried out a coup d'état, establishing the Revolutionary Council of the Union of Burma, whose members were mostly drawn from the armed forces. After revamping economic and foreign policy, by the late 1980s, Burma had become one of the world's poorest countries. In 2002, Ne Win was placed under house arrest following the imprisonment of his opponents. He remained in custody until his death, on December 5, 2002, in Yangon, Myanmar.
