Twyla Tharp was born on July 1, 1941, in Portland, Indiana. She studied at the Vera Lynn School of Dance and then attended Barnard College, studying at the American Ballet Theatre School and graduating in 1963. Tharp danced with the Paul Taylor Dance Company before forming her own company in 1969. She created works such as Deuce Coupe and Fait Accompli and was one of the first American choreographers to integrated popular music into her work. Tharp disbanded her company in 1988 and became a resident artist at the American Ballet Theatre.
