African-American track and field star Tommie Smith was born on June 6, 1944, in Clarksville, Texas. In college, he broke 13 world records in track. In 1968, he broke both the Olympic and world records and won the 200-meter race. Smith was inducted into the National Track & Field Hall of Fame in 1978. Since his Olympic victory, Smith has dedicated himself to coaching and human rights activism.
