Timothy Leary was a U.S. psychologist who was a leading advocate for the use of LSD and other psychoactive drugs. While teaching at Harvard, he began experimenting with psilocybin, administering it to graduate students. Leary's work was highly controversial; he was dismissed from Harvard in 1963 and incarcerated in 1970. He escaped, was recaptured in Afghanistan, and spoke publicly in the '80s.
