Born on Sept. 27, 1840 in Landau, Germany, Thomas Nast studied art as a child, eventually going on to become a satirical cartoonist for Harper’s Weekly. His work ardently critiqued slavery and supported the Union during the Civil War, and later exposed the workings of criminal mastermind “Boss” Tweed. Nast also popularized the donkey and elephant images for the Democrat and Republican parties.
