Profile

Théodore Rousseau was born on April 15, 1812, in Paris, France. He began painting at just 14 years old, often working outdoors. In 1833, he settled in the village of Barbizon. The following decade, he worked with a group of other landscape painters, some of which included Jean-Francois Millet, Jules Dupre and Charles-Francois Daubigny. Collectively, they became known as the Barbizon School. Rousseau's work is known for its highly textured brushstrokes and unruly representation of nature. He died on February 22, 1867.
