Profile

Born in Puerto Padre, Cuba, on March 29, 1952, boxer Teófilo Stevenson is best known for becoming the first fighter to win three Olympic gold medals in one weight class. At the 1972 Olympic Games, Stevenson defeated American Duane Bobick, a competitor he had lost to the previous year at the Pan American Games, and went on to win the gold medal by default when Romanian Ion Alexe dropped out of the bout due to an injury. At the 1976 Games in Montreal, Stevenson became a household name, beating his first three opponents and knocking out Romanian Mircea Simon in the final. He continued his winning streak at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, returning with three gold medals. Stevenson died on June 11, 2012, at the age of 60, in Havana, Cuba.
