Taj Mahal was born Henry Saint Clair Fredericks on May 17, 1942, in Harlem, New York. After college, he moved to Santa Monica and joined Ry Cooder to form the folk-rock band Rising Sons. As a solo act, Taj Mahal was a pioneer of world music, combining American, Caribbean and West-African sounds to create a distinctive genre. He's won two Grammy Awards and continues to perform.
