Stephen Sondheim was born on March 22, 1930, in New York City. He wrote lyrics for Gypsy and West Side Story before going on to compose both music and words for 1970s’ shows like Company, A Little Night Music and Sweeney Todd. His 1984, classic Sunday in the Park With George won the Pulitzer and his work, known for its intelligence and defiance of convention, continues to be revived on Broadway.
